Ikea’s Brilliant Marketing Campaigns of 2014
2014 was a good year for Ikea’s marketing campaigns. They were bold, unique and altogether fun. From clever parodies of commercials and movies we know well, to an interactive “furniture rock wall,” we highlight these favorites as Ikea’s best ads of the year.
Written by BBH Asia Pacific, the “Bookbook” commercial was one of Ikea’s most popular ads of the year. Over-the-top enthusiasm and “tech-specs” were the focus of the Ikea 2015 catalog, very similar to the usual Apple commercial. Nonetheless, BBH and Ikea were able to prove that print is still alive and able to keep up in a digital age.
In Clermont-Ferrand, France, Ikea and Ubi Bene created an outdoor installation that transforms an apartment into a rock wall. Ikea furniture pieces were used as ledges and obstacles creating a interactive billboard that showcased the furniture from a different perspective.
For Halloween, Ikea Singapore recreated the famous “come play with us” scene from Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. A boy is seen riding his big wheel tricycle through the familiar Ikea store layouts in the dark, passing through rooms, beds, rugs and flickering modern lampshades. The video was created to promote Ikea’s late hours, until 11:00 PM, a very fitting theme for the time of the year.
Ikea’s clever parodies have helped create some of the year’s most memorable campaigns. The marketing messages are simple, even if the putting together of the furniture they are advertising is not.
