The Porsche 911: One Of The Most Remarkable Sports Car Designs

The first thing you think about when you hear “Porsche” is the 911; a rear-engine fastback with unmistakable round headlights that are reminiscent of frog eyes. It’s become the symbol of the German automaker, whose roots began with the Volkswagen Beetle. Unlike Italian sports car manufacturers that will create brand new platforms from scratch, Porsche has continuously improved the 911 platform for over 50 years. Loved by many and hated by few, the Porsche 911 is simply one of the greatest cars ever made.

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, was the lead designer of the Porsche 911. Although the 911 shares the same fastback silhouette as the Porsche 356 before it, it is a much more superior machine in terms of power and handling, as well as having a larger interior. The 911 had a much more aggressive profile than the 356, however still had elegant body curves and a more friendly demeanor. As the 911 progressed, more power was added, as well as an intimidating body styling, from gigantic rear wings, to wide fender flares.

Today, the Porsche 911 still remains one of the most coveted sports cars in the world. Although more common than a Ferarri F40, the Porsche 911 still has a high entry price, with secondhand 911’s still retaining a good bit of value. They are no-nonsense vehicles with an emphasis on the driving experience. 911’s continue to be popular platforms for race and rally cars, as well as collector’s pieces.
